Coach Terra King

Terra is currently the Varsity coach at Harper Creek High School.  With over 20 years of coaching experience, she still considers herself a student of the game.

Volleyball has been a passion of Terra’s since middle school.  She started out her early years competing as a setter and has worked hard to develop an all-around knowledge of the game to share with her players.  Although it is difficult for her to pin point the one thing that she enjoys most about the game, one of her favorite things about coaching is building relationships with her players and teaching leadership skills.

For Coach King, another of the greatest things about coaching is watching her players develop a passion and love for volleyball.  She has a knack for establishing a strong work ethic with her teams and she holds herself to that same standard.  All the while, keeping things in perspective.  Volleyball is a sport, meant to be fun and her teams always look like they are having fun, working hard and respect each other.

Over the 20 years Coach King has been at the helm, the Beavers have made their first trips to the Final Four in school history, won Regional Titles, District Titles, League and City Titles.  This is a direct result of the dedication and heart that Terra puts into building her program from the middle school to high school.

In the most recent years Terra has taken a new coaching title as “Coach Mom” while coaching at Midwest Select.  Terra and her husband Derek have five children.  Coaching her daughters in volleyball is something she has always looked forward to since she knew she was having a girl!  Watching another group of young girls start to love the game and build relationships though this amazing platform really puts things into perspective.

Coach King believes it is a privilege to be able to use her skills and knowledge of the game of volleyball to be able to help these young athletes grow and develop as young people, leaders and volleyball players.

As a player Sarah was a four-year varsity defensive specialist for Harper Creek, two-year player for Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and two seasons of Western Michigan University Club Volleyball Team as a libero.

Sarah has a passion for developing youth sports within the community. She has been coaching within the Harper Creek School Systems at various levels on and off since 2003, most recently the last three years as the Junior Varsity coach. She has previously coached club volleyball for USA Michigan, WeCan, Redline, and this is her second year with Midwest Select as a 3-month coach.

In the past 5 years Sarah has focused on balancing work, family, and coaching her three daughters at various levels in both club volleyball and travel softball. Her coaching philosophy is that “youth sports teach more than just the game. It’s a life experience. Being a part of a team teaches hard work, responsibility, dedication, teamwork, and self-worth.”

Sarah is a very enthusiastic coach on and off the court. She looks forward to each season as a new opportunity to grow along with her team. Her favorite part of coaching is the “ah-ha moment” when something clicks within an athlete or the team, when they achieve their goal that they have been working towards no matter how small or big.
